Papermaking in Viersen has a long tradition.

The mill was foundet in 1871 by Aaron Elkan and operated by his jewish family.
In 1958 the mill was bought by Europa Carton, who changed over the next decades the owner-ship a few times.
Today the Viersen mill belongs to the Smurfit Kappa Group, the European leader in containerboard, as well as corrugated and solid board packaging.
